What is Acne?

Acne is medically know as Acne Vulgaris, It is a skin disease which involves oil glands at the base of hair follicle. Human skin has pores which connect to oil glands located under the skin. 
Acne commonly starts during puberty between the ages of 11-14 and tends to be worse in people with oily skin. Acne can affect people of all ages and races. Although acne affects both men and women, young men suffer from acne for longer due to high testerone levels.
What is Acne?

Acne is a skin condition that occurs when your's abeceous (oil gland) at the base of hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. Acne usually appears on your face, neck, chest, back and shoulders. Effective treatments are available, but acne can be persistent.


Acne is most common among teenagers, with a reported prevalence of 70 to 87 percent. Increasingly, younger children are getting acne as well.


Depending on its severity, acne can cause emotional distress and scar the skin. The earlier you start treatment, the lower your risk of lasting physical and emotional damage.

What are the causes of Acne?

Genetic - people having more oily skin with active sebaceous glands.


Hormones - Those who have more of androgens are prone to severe acne. Girls having hormonal imbalance like PCOS ( Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) or on hormonal medication may have severe uncontrolled acne.


Certain medications like tuberculous treatment, intake of steroids can cause Acne.

Application of Comedogenic Creams, Oils or Topical Steroid Ointments also precipitate Acne.

What are the Types of Acne?

Depending on the severity of acne can be graded as mild, moderate and severe acne.


* Whiteheads (Closed plugged pores)

* Blackheads (Open plugged pores - the oil turns brown when it is exposed to air)

* Small Red, Tender Bumps (papules)

* Pimples (Pustules), which are papules with pus at their tips.

* Large, Solid, Painful Lumps beneath the surface of the skin (Cystic Lesions)


Mild Acne will have more of black head and white heads commonly called as Comedones and a few papules.


Moderate acne will be with papules, and few pustules. They have a tendency to leave red or black/brown pigment, also mild scarring.


Severe acne are mostly with pustules, nodules and cystic acne. They are resistant to treatment and leave severe scarring.

What are the factors that Aggravate Acne?

* Medications like oral steroids, Hormonal pills, ATT ( Anti-Tubecular Treatment) etc.,

* Topical oil based comido-genic creams and steroid creams, oil massage etc.,

* Stress can also Aggravate Existing Pimples.  



What are the Complications of Acne?


Moderate and Severe Acne can leave Pigmentation and Scarring.

Severe Acne with Marks and Scars can reduce the self esteem of the patient, in some cases they may have depression.


What is the common age at which we can get Acne?


Usually teenage when the hormones become active and reduce by 30 yrs of age. Few may develop Acne at the adult age after 35 years, which is called Adult Acne due to Hormonal Imbalance.


What is the Regular Skin Care for Acne Prone Skin? 


Regular skin care regimen can control mild to moderate acne.

* Use oil control face wash with Salicylic Acid, Glycolic Acid (or) Tea Tree Oil.

* Apply only non-comedogenic water based moisturizer. 

* Use Sunscreen if have tendency to Pigment.

* Use Topical Acne Preparations like Clindamycin, Benzoyl Peroxide or Topical Retinoid     Creams.


Treatment of Acne: 


Mild Acne


Face washes and Topical Retinoids and Benzoyl Peroxide will be Sufficient.


Moderate Acne


Along with Topical Ointment your Dermatologist may prescribe Oral Antibiotics like Tetracyclins, Minocyclin etc., for a few weeks.


Chemical Peels may be used to control Acne and Acne Marks.


Blue Light Therapy can be used to reduce Acne.


Severe Acne


If not controlled by antibiotics you may need Oral Retinoids. Hormonal induced acne may require Hormonal Therapy.
